Designing accessible websites
According to a report by the United Nations (UN) and the World Health Organization (WHO), there are one billion people who experience some type of disability. Of these, 85 million are permanently resident in Latin America.
The advance of technology is undoubtedly something that made possible other types of openings and concepts that should not be left aside when creating a website or even an app. We already know that brands must focus on their users, but here the challenge goes beyond that. We must ask ourselves what can I do as a brand to become an agent of change and transform the reality of this group of people.
User experience remains the soul of the strategy and to achieve change we must work without losing sight of usability and accessibility. Taking the reference of The Digital Accessibility Handbook, today, “two out of three e-commerce sites are not accessible despite the fact that 82% of consumers would be willing to pay more money to get the same product or service from a competitor whose website is accessible”.
From our UX area we leave you some recommendations: the navigability of the site should be simple and intuitive and the site should be easily navigable only using the keyboard. From the design use a contrast ratio of 4.5:1 and from the text take into account a typography higher than 14px. Also, if there are acronyms, they should be at least once per page. Finally, include alternative text in the images and if there is a video, it should contain subtitles.
Agencies and brands have today a great opportunity, and also a great commitment, to change the lives of billions of people by implementing small actions on websites.
